Perched on a smart-looking, futuristic camera dock, the svelte Kodak EasyShare V530 is hard to ignore. But our newly crowned ultracompact Editors' Choice is much more than just another pretty face in the digital-camera crowd. It's a true performer that makes snapping great digital photographs easy.

The V530 is a 5MP camera with a 3X optical zoom (35-mm equivalent of 36- to 108-mm zoom range) and a maximum f/stop range of f/2.8 to f/4.8 across the zoom range. Our new Editors' Choice boasts a higher megapixel count than our previous selection, the 4MP Canon PowerShot SD300 Digital Elph, so it allows for larger prints.

Controls and menus are better organized and easier to use than the SD300's, too. The LCD displays short descriptions of the 20 shooting modes and one auto mode to help beginners understand the scene modes. The camera doesn't have a manual mode, though, and there's no viewfinder, which we miss. Relying solely on the smallish 2-inch LCD for framing shots will be a problem when you're trying to shoot in bright daylight.

The cool dock looks beautiful, and it raises the bar for camera docks, which typically look and function like a cheap afterthought. Indeed, we think the accessory gives the aura of a museum piece by contrasting the circular base with the rectangular shape of the camera. And at the push of a button, the dock initiates a slide show of images on the camera's LCD—a nice touch.

Though video capabilities aren't as important as its still-image prowess, we couldn't help but be impressed with the V530's video options. The camera shoots in MPEG-4 format, which squeezes significantly more footage onto a memory card than the more common Motion JPEG. The VGA (640-by-480) video is recorded at 30 frames per second until the memory card is full, and the camera applies digital antishake during video shooting (though curiously, not for still-image shooting). Video footage was still a bit jerky even when filmed with the antishake enabled, but you can't beat the convenience of shooting MPEG-4 with an ultracompact camera.

Our image-quality tests turned out quite well. Our simulated-daylight shot had excellent color saturation, accurate color matching, and hardly any noise, though we found a bit more purple fringing than we did in the SD300's test shots. Overall, we saw very good exposure and a good dynamic range that included a rich, deep black and pure white.

Flash coverage was excellent—better than the SD300's. Because of the flash, the image was on target in terms of exposure, and we didn't see any noise. The test images had sharp details, excellent color saturation, and accurate color matching. Again, there was a tiny bit of fringing in the image, but nothing very noticeable. The V530 got a score of 1,350 lines on our resolution test, which is within the acceptable range for a 5MP camera.

Of all the tests we ran on the V530, we were most amazed by its times on our performance tests, which were some of the speediest we've seen. The 1.1-second recycle time was simply astounding, beating the SD300's time by more than 4 seconds, and there was no shutter lag whatsoever. In fact, the response of the lens rivaled that of digital SLRs. And although the V530's bootup time wasn't as speedy as the SD300's, it was still very impressive, at 2.8 seconds.

We found just a little bit of barrel distortion at the wide-angle end of the zoom, but no pin-cushion distortion at the telephoto end. Both results were what we generally find in point-and-shoot cameras.

The SD300 has served us well as Editors' Choice for almost a year. But the V530's menus, video capabilities, beautiful dock, and blistering speed make it a worthy successor.

Kodak Grabs Top Share in U.S. Market Kodak Grabs Top Share in U.S. Market

May 11, 2005 – Kodak shipped 900,000 digital cameras to U.S. retailers from January to March, grabbing the top market share, market research firm IDC reported Monday. Shipments are up 41 percent from the same period last year. Not far behind is Canon, whose shipments are up 72 percent with 850,000 domestically. Sony hung on for the third spot in the U.S. market with 800,000 shipments.

The digital camera market boomed in 2004, when they were said to be the most popular electronics gifts of the year, the Consumer Electronics Association reported. 22.3 million digital cameras were shipped in the United States last year, compared with 16.4 million the year before. Some analysts predict that the market has peaked and sales will only slide this year. However, IDC reports that 27.3 million units are expected to ship in the United States this year.

Kodak took the biggest slice of the American pie with 20.4 percent of the market, IDC stated. Canon came in second with 19.3 percent and Sony was third with 18.1 percent. The Big Three have interchanged positions in the past year, but remain solid at the top. Another research firm, Lyra Research, found the same U.S. market share results, with Kodak, Canon, and Sony leading in that order. Olympus was a distant fourth with 10.9 percent of the market and 480,000 shipments. HP, Fujifilm, and Nikon were fifth through seventh respectively, all with single digits of market share.

With a wide spread of digital photography services, Kodak is doing well during its three-year restructuring plan to cut 15,000 jobs. Most of the jobs were cut in film factories, echoing the decline of traditional film sales. Kodak’s film division sales were down 13 percent during the fourth quarter of the 2004 fiscal year, as its digital division experienced a 23 percent increase in sales. An earlier IDC study reported that Kodak EasyShare printers were the best-selling snapshot photo printers in the United States in 2004.

Crave may not know much about art, but we know what we like. We do know a thing or two about beauty -- heck, half the Crave team was hired on looks alone. We therefore have a bit of a thing about the Kodak EasyShare M1033 compact camera. Single or continuous autofocus give you the option of selecting focus with a squeeze of the shutter button, or constantly tracking focus. You can also switch over to macro mode, or fix focus to infinity -- and beyond, maybe.
